Solar shading

The importance of shading and solar control this summer

With the summer solstice on 21 June and heatwaves becoming increasingly common, solar shading is more important than ever. By keeping the sun’s heat outside, it helps maintain a comfortable indoor temperature without constantly relying on air conditioning. This not only improves comfort at home but also reduces energy consumption and lowers your environmental footprint. Discover why solar shading is the smart solution for a comfortable and sustainable summer.

Solar shading should always come first, and active cooling systems such as air conditioning should only be used when necessary. With the arrival of the summer solstice on 21 June, solar shading is an essential tool for improving comfort, reducing energy consumption and creating buildings that are resilient to climate change.

As heatwaves become more frequent and intense around the world, the number of air conditioning units in Europe is expected to rise to 275 million by 2050, according to a study by the International Energy Agency. The additional energy required for indoor cooling results in higher CO₂ emissions. At a time of , it also leads to increased costs for households, businesses and organisations.

But there is another solution. Shading is a sustainable measure that helps reduce – or even eliminate – the need for active cooling systems, helping us stay comfortable during the summer heat. Using shading to stay cool during the summer months is not a new idea – it has been around for hundreds of years. Modern, innovative materials combined with smart shading technologies maximise the effectiveness of external blinds, curtains and awnings.

How does solar shading make a difference?

  • Prevents up to 90% of heat from entering a building through external solar shading systems
  • Studies show that indoor temperatures can be reduced by between 4°C and 10°C with automated solar shading during a heatwave*
  • Supports better sleep, a key factor in recovery, cognitive performance and overall health
  • Eliminates uncomfortable glare that can cause headaches and eye strain

Global Shading Day is an annual awareness initiative held every 21 March, providing expert advice and insights into the benefits of shading throughout the year.

Anders Hall, President of the European Solar Shading Organisation, which coordinates Global Shading Day, said: “Record-breaking summer temperatures and longer periods of drought, with days exceeding 35°C, are becoming increasingly common. Regions such as Southern Europe are facing critical levels of heat stress. Shading – and especially external shading – prevents the sun’s heat from entering our homes, workplaces and public spaces during the summer months. This means we can reduce our reliance on air conditioning and save energy. It means we can feel cooler, healthier and happier throughout the summer.”
